ALPHA BRAVO computer font v1.0 ©2003 Harold Lohner (Additional copyright & trademark information follows.) HLohner@aol.com www.haroldsfonts.com The dingbats are designed to suggest each of the 26 letter-names used in the radio "phonetic alphabet". These words were chosen to be better heard and differentiated that the names of the letters, many of which can sound very much alike (F/S, for example). You can read more about this at the website of the International Telecommunication UnionÑ http://life.itu.ch/radioclub/rr/ap14.htm/ These dingbats are intended to be used in learning the "phonetic alphabet" and in personal communications for practicing the alphabet. The capital alpha is the same as A, so the lowercase is used. BRAVO is a tough concept to depict! CHARLIE is, of course, the one and only Charlie Chaplin. Of the 4 men's names, it's the only one that could be so purely depicted. OSCAR¨ is the Academy Award¨; what you think when you hear ÒOscar?Ó MIKE and VICTOR were more difficult, so I went for a microphone (which can be shortened to "mike" and relates to radio) and then the victrola just fell into place. ECHO was designed like a road sign. FOXTROT and TANGO are the two dances referenced. For Foxtrot, I've shown some foxy steps; I suppose I could have had a fox trotting :-) Tango depicts a couple striking a characteristic dramatic pose. GOLF is golf club, ball, and tee. HOTEL has palm trees to make it seem more like a vacation. INDIA, LIMA, and QUEBEC are the three geographic names, here represented by maps. Before this project, I could have recognized only India of the three. JULIET and, later, ROMEO, are conceived as international symbols for the famous lovers. (ShakespeareÕs public domain, right?) I liked how each of these worked with its letter's shape. KILO = 1000 grams NOVEMBER is the eleventh month and is usually positioned like that in full-year calendars PAPA and ZULU are the famous warning-sign man, with gender-specific hat and baby, and with fairly authentic Zulu outfit. SIERRA is the Sierra Mountains. UNIFORM is just the clothes, not the man. WHISKEY is loosely adapted from the famous Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey bottle, although it is not actually legible. X-RAY of a hand. YANKEE is a New York Yankee baseball cap. There are other kinds of Yanks (all Northerners, even all Americans) but this one seemed the most iconic.
