The Trends in Web Typography

We’re seeing change in font use and designs in Web 2.0, but these changes aren’t just aesthetic but functional too. So I thought I’d share some insights we’ve had while discussing these trends. Eventhough I’ve narrowed it down to font usage, the trends I see in this artcile obviously apply to all design elements.

The last 5 years various technological advances are causing higher quality screens to hit the market and bigger ones too. Screen sizes have been dramatically increasing. 15” and 17” LCD panels are being replaced by 17” and 19” LCD panels. Heck, don’t forget Widescreen, which is being pushed by Dell and Apple. Apple has now gone all out Widescreen.

However, something is growing faster than screen size and that is the resolution of these screens. The result is that the average PPI (pixels per inch) is almost doubling from 30 – 70 pixels per inch, to 70 – 100 pixels per inch.
